About Peru Coffee

When it comes to Peru coffee, many people might not be familiar with it. Located on the west side of South America, bordered by Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, and Bolivia and Chile to the south, Peru has the Pacific Ocean on its western side. Peru actually began cultivating coffee as early as the 17th century, but most of the coffee produced was seized by the government for repaying national debts. Due to debts owed to countries like England and Spain, around 2 million hectares of land were used to repay these debts, including land for coffee cultivation.

Later, with the end of this event, the land gradually returned to the hands of farmers. Encouraged by the Peruvian government, coffee began to be planted on a large scale. The coffee-growing areas are surrounded by the Andes Mountains, with the altitude for growing specialty coffee ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters. The fertile soil, coupled with the alternating dry and rainy seasons, and an average temperature of around 16°C to 20°C, create an environment perfect for coffee growth. This favorable environment has contributed to Peru gradually becoming a coffee-exporting country. Coffee exports account for about 28% of Peru's total export value, with a cultivation area reaching 380,000 hectares and 160,000 families involved in coffee farming. Today, Peru is one of the major producers of Arabica coffee, ranking fifth in the world in Arabica coffee production and export. It even ranks first globally in organic coffee production.

Many people say that Peru is a rising star in the coffee world, and this statement is not an exaggeration at all. In 2017, Peru held its first Cup of Excellence competition, where Caturra and Bourbon varieties processed using the washed method won a high score of 92.25. In the 2018 COE competition, a washed Geisha from Nueva Alianza in Cusco scored 91.08. In 2019, a new variety, Costa Rica 95, won first place with a score of 92.28, while another new variety, Centroamericano H1, processed using the honey method, also ranked in the top ten. In 2020, Vela Ethan (維啦怡森) scored second place with 89.58 and tenth place with 88.58 in the Cup of Excellence.

Peru's excellent environment, combined with the hardworking farmers, has certainly made it a dark horse among South American coffee-producing countries.
