Vela Ethan Company, as a member of Rainforest Alliance Coffee Certification, specializes in managing Peruvian coffee-growing regions. So, what is Rainforest Alliance coffee in Peru like

1. Overview of Peru Coffee Regions
Peru coffee is primarily grown in the high-altitude regions of the upper Amazon River basin, situated between the Andes Mountains and the rainforest, at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,800 meters. This unique environment produces high-quality coffee that is highly favored in the international market.
2. Production Scale and Export
Currently, more than 223,000 families in Peru are engaged in coffee cultivation, covering an area of 427,000 hectares. In 2023, Peru's annual green coffee bean production exceeded 240,000 metric tons, with major exports to the European and U.S. markets. However, due to the outbreak of coffee leaf rust in 2012, production has declined compared to the peak in 2011.

3. Rainforest Alliance Certification Status
In Peru, Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee reached 924,000 metric tons in 2023, accounting for 38.5% of the country's total production. However, due to insufficient market demand, only about 46% of the certified coffee was sold as Rainforest Alliance-certified, totaling 428,000 metric tons.

Sustainable Development Projects
The Rainforest Alliance has promoted multiple sustainable development projects in Peru, including the "Productive Soils" project and the "Improving the Sustainability of the Coffee Supply Chain" project. The "Productive Soils" project has been implemented in the Junín region, improving fertilization techniques for approximately 2,200 coffee farms through more than 100 demonstration plots and developing two applications to support technical assistance and fertilization calculations.
Future Plans and Challenges
The "Improving Sustainability in the Coffee Supply Chain" project will be launched in the San Martin region in September 2024. This project will support 1,700 coffee farmers in addressing challenges within the supply chain, particularly helping them comply with the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This includes collecting geographical reference data, conducting deforestation risk analysis, and enhancing product traceability to ensure that coffee production meets the no-deforestation requirements.

6. Impact on the Global Market
These efforts in Peru not only enhance the local coffee quality but also set an example for sustainable development in the global coffee market. By promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental protection, the Rainforest Alliance aims to further strengthen the position of Peruvian coffee in international markets and encourage the adoption of more widespread sustainable farming practices.
