About coffee farming certifications

When we sip a cup of rich coffee, we often overlook the profound significance behind it. Coffee farming certifications not only reflect the pursuit of quality but also highlight the commitment to environmental protection, social justice, and economic sustainability.。


Here is an introduction to the purposes and characteristics of these important certifications, guiding us to understand the significance behind each coffee certification.


Fair Trade Certified

- Purpose: To protect the interests of coffee farmers and workers, providing better working conditions and community development support.

- Features: Encourages farmers to implement environmentally friendly agricultural practices through minimum price guarantees and additional community development funds.


To apply for Fair Trade certification, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Standards Compliance:Comply with the social, economic, and environmental standards set by FLO International.

  2. Apply: Submit an application to FLO-CERT or FLO International, providing the necessary documents and information.

  3. Audit: Undergo regular audits conducted by FLO-CERT to confirm ongoing compliance with Fair Trade standards.

  4. Certification: After passing the audit, obtain certification and use the Fair Trade label.


Organic Certification

- Purpose: Ensure that no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or GMOs are used during the coffee production process, protecting the environment and consumer health.

- Features: Focus on ecological balance and the protection of natural ecosystems, providing pure and uncontaminated coffee.


To apply for Organic Certification, the following steps must be followed:

1.Preparation stage: Producers must understand and comply with organic production standards, including not using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms.

2. Submit application: Submit an application to an organic certification body and provide relevant information about farm management and production processes.

3. On-site audit: The certification body will conduct an on-site audit of the farm and production processes to ensure all practices comply with organic standards.

4. Certification granted: After passing the audit, the producer will receive organic certification and can use the organic logo on products and marketing materials.


Rainforest Alliance Certified

- Purpose: Through sustainable agricultural practices, biodiversity is protected and farmers' livelihoods are improved.

- Features: Focus on ecological protection, promote the harmonious coexistence of agriculture and nature, and ensure that the negative environmental impacts of coffee cultivation are minimized.

The process to apply for Rainforest Alliance certification is as follows:

  1. Understand the standards: Familiarize yourself with the Rainforest Alliance's sustainable agriculture standards.

  2. Submit application: Submit the application to the Rainforest Alliance and provide the necessary documents.

  3. On-site audit: Undergo an on-site audit by the Rainforest Alliance to assess whether agricultural practices meet the standards.

  4. Certification granted: After passing the audit, the certification from the Rainforest Alliance will be granted.

UTZ Certified

- Purpose: Improve farmers' living standards, achieve better agricultural practices, and promote environmental care.

- Features: Increase production transparency and traceability, allowing consumers to clearly understand the source of their coffee and support responsible coffee production.


The process to apply for UTZ Certified is as follows:

  1. Understand the standards: Familiarize yourself with UTZ's sustainable agriculture and responsible production standards.

2. Register: Register within the UTZ certification system.

3. Internal management: Establish an internal management system to comply with UTZ standards.

4. Third-party audit: Conduct on-site audits through UTZ-recognized certification bodies.

5. Obtain certification: After passing the audit, receive the UTZ certification label.

4C (Common Code for the Coffee Community)

- Purpose: Improve the overall sustainability of the coffee industry, including environmental protection, social justice, and economic sustainability.

- Features: Set industry standards to promote improvements in production conditions, reduce environmental impact, and enhance social justice.


Direct Trade Certification

- Purpose: Promote direct trade between coffee buyers and farmers to ensure that farmers receive fairer compensation and better trading conditions.

- Features: Through transparent transactions, enhance trust and cooperation between both parties, and improve coffee quality.



The process to apply for 4C is as follows:


  1. Understand 4C standards: Familiarize yourself with the requirements for sustainable agriculture and production practices.

  2. Register: Register in the 4C system and begin the application process.

  3. Set up management entity: Appoint a management entity (ME) responsible for the 4C unit and implement an internal management system.

C.A.F.E. Practices (Coffee and Farmer Equity Practices)

- Purpose: Ensure that quality, economic, social, and environmental standards are adhered to during the coffee procurement process.

-Features: Founded by Starbucks, this set of guidelines covers all aspects of coffee production, including farm management, labor conditions, and environmental protection, aiming to promote sustainable development and social responsibility.


The process to apply for C.A.F.E. Practices is as follows:

1. Submit Application: Submit the C.A.F.E. Practices certification application to Starbucks or its designated third party.

2. Conduct Audit: Undergo an audit and evaluation by Starbucks or its designated third party to ensure compliance with quality, social, economic, and environmental standards.

3. Continuous Compliance: After passing the audit, continue to adhere to the relevant standards of C.A.F.E. Practices.
